This book/CD pack will show you how to arrange and improvise popular and jazz tunes in your own style, using a clear, step-by-step method developed over many years by successful jazz pianist and teacher Debbie Denke. The CD features both solo piano demonstrations and bass and drum accompaniments that let players practice performing with a rhythm section. |

This easy play-along course will be of benefit to the near-beginner, even if you've never played blues piano before. David Cohen (The Blues Project, Country Joe and the Fish, etc.) starts at the beginning, quickly getting into the elementary theory needed to understand chord progressions and the 12-bar blues form. Then it's right into setting up a solid left-hand rhythm in the bass to create a bedrock for the right hand improvisations to come. By the time this lesson ends, even new students will be understanding how to play the blues. |
|
With only a basic knowledge of the piano, you can enter the world of jazz improvisation! With Warren's expert guidance, you'll quickly develop an understanding of the building blocks of jazz piano: scales, melodic development, rhythm comping, chord building, bass lines, etc. |
One of the world's greatest contemporary players explores jazz piano from basic theory to advanced solo pieces. Warren Bernhardt covers the essential scales, modes, chord voicings, intervals, progressions and everything else needed to add excitement, color and creativity to your playing. |

This Book/CD teaches the hottest tags, patterns, turnarounds, and solos in the style of the jazz world's legendary talents, such as Bud Powell, Thelonious Monk, George Shearing, Red Garland, Erroll Garner, Chick Corea, Bill Evans, and Keith Jarrett. Included in this book/CD are detailed performance notes for all examples. |

A respected soloist, clinician and writer, Frank Mantooth has written this book for any keyboard player interested in developing better jazz chord voicing. Written more as a "how-to" book than a textbook, Voicings For Jazz Keyboard will make a valuable addition to the library of any performer, arranger, teacher or jazz theorist. |

By Cherry Lane Music. "The blues is one of the most popular, expressive and influential styles of music, as well as the basis for R & B, jazz, gospel and rock. This new book/CD pack will help you: learn essential blues techniques; discover a surefire way to improvise; and experience the joy of expressing yourself through the blues." |
|
This book provides a step-by-step approach to learning basic piano realizations of jazz and pop tunes from lead sheets. Systems for voicing chords are presented from the most elementary to the advanced, along with methods for practicing each system. Both the non-jazz and the advanced jazz player will benefit from the focus on chords, chord voicings, harmony, melody, accompaniment and styles. |

Dr. John adds an arsenal of classic 12-bar and 16-bar blues while exploring the use of tenths, parallel 5ths, chord patterns, right-hand fills, major-to-minor changes, and a myriad of embellishments. He digs into traditional, butterfly stride, dissects the influential styles of Lloyd Glenn, Charles Brown and other legendary players, and shows how to interpret and improvise classic songs. |
|
Dr. John's gospel piano session explores the church-based rhythms and harmonies that helped give birth to the blues. This session includes the "Famous Lick," leading to an encyclopedic survey of the contributions of the great players: Professor Longhair, Papa Yancy, Jellyroll Morton, Huey Smith, Toots Washington, Charles Brown, Allen Toussaint, Champion Jack Dupree, Jolly Landrey and the Wild Chapatoulas, and other legendary bluesmen. |

One of the very best collections in print for upper intermediate to advanced piano. You will simply love these arrangements, and so will anyone else listening to them! All the pieces sound great, and are fun to learn. I would also recommend this collection to any lounge pianist looking for a good source for quality arrangements. OK, so Jeopardy Theme is a dumb inclusion for this collection, but there must be some unwritten law that at least one lemon has to be included. . .

This is a classic book which should be in every modern pianist's library, in my opinion. The second part of the book contains traditional 7th chords in all keys, left and right hands separate. Of particular use is the "chord abbreviations chart" which lists all the common ways a chord can be indicated in a jazz chart. Takes the mystery out of those chord symbols!
If you have any questions at all about scales -- traditional to jazz -- this collection contains all of them, complete with fingerings. For jazz musicians, this book will open up a whole world of riffs and melodic ideas! Plus, if you have ever wondered what a Mongolian scale or a Chinese scale is, the book lists all alternate names for each particular scale.
Very highly recommended collection, from beginning improvisers to advanced jazz pianists.
